Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome: Case report and literature review on a rare cause of Chronic duodenal obstruction

Summary
Superior mesenteric artery syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening cause of chronic duodenal obstruction. Patients frequently exhibit vague, non-specific symptoms that may mimic more common conditions such as gastritis and gastroesophageal reflux disease. A 16-year-old male, severely malnourished with a BMI of 12.6 kg/m2 and a three-year history of recurrent epigastric pain and postprandial vomiting, was referred to our surgical outpatient department. Initial ultrasound and barium studies were inconclusive; however, an abdominal computed tomography confirmed SMA syndrome. He had duodeno-jejunal anastomosis, leading to complete relief of symptoms. His recovery went smoothly afterwards, and his BMI was 17.1 kg/m2 at three months follow-up.
